Azerbaijan is currently facing accusations of glorifying racism and allowing hate speech against Armenians in a case brought to the UN’s International Court of Justice by Armenia. The case, filed in 2021, alleges ethnic cleansing and destruction of Armenian cultural sites by Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has denied these claims and has argued that the ICJ does not have jurisdiction over the issues raised in the complaint, claiming that the case does not meet the conditions of the UN’s anti-discrimination treaty.
The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory has been ongoing for three decades since the collapse of the Soviet Union. A 2020 war over Nagorno-Karabakh left more than 6,600 people dead, leading to a Russia-brokered ceasefire agreement that granted Azerbaijan control over parts of the region. This conflict has fueled tensions between the two countries.
Azerbaijan has called the lawsuit brought by Armenia “premature”, arguing that Armenia did not engage in negotiations before resorting to legal action. Azerbaijan also has a case against Armenia lodged with the ICJ, alleging breaches of the same convention. The two sides have agreed to begin negotiations on a peace treaty, but there is resistance from some residents in Armenia’s border regions who see Azerbaijan’s actions as encroaching on their territory. The case highlights the ongoing disputes and tensions between the two neighbouring countries in the Caucasus region.
