The City of Chattanooga has announced a two-phase plan to transform Central Avenue, with restriping and reconfiguration set to begin on Monday. The project will last through the middle of May, and aims to reduce the number of lanes from four to three, install dedicated multimodal lanes, and create on-street parking to accommodate the growing Southside area. Phase one, starting on April 15th, will repave and restripe Central Avenue from East 11th Street to East Main Street, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction. Phase two will then reconfigure Central Avenue from East Main Street to East 23rd Street, reducing traffic to three lanes and adding buffered multimodal lanes. Mayor Tim Kelly stated that well-maintained roads lead to development, safety, and quality of life. This project builds on similar work completed last year, and is part of an effort to revitalize infrastructure in Chattanooga. The city received a $25 million federal grant from the Biden administration’s RAISE program in 2022 to support these initiatives. This project is expected to improve traffic flow, safety, and overall quality of life for residents and businesses in the area.
