New Records Show New York Mayor Adams Facing Fundraising Challenges Amidst Scandals

New York Mayor Eric Adams has raised nearly $3 million for his next mayoral run, but his fundraising has slowed in recent months amidst several scandals that have rocked his administration. Adams is facing a federal investigation into potential ties to Turkey, as well as the indictment of his former Buildings Commissioner and several individuals involved in a straw donor scheme.

According to the city’s Campaign Finance Board, Adams’ campaign raised $1.3 million between January and July of last year but only brought in $400,000 from July 2023 to January 12 of this year. The decrease in fundraising coincides with the various scandals that have plagued Adams’ tenure as mayor.

Recent expenditures made by Adams’ political operation include payments totaling over $150,000 to Brianna Suggs’ company, Suggs Solutions LLC, whose home was raided by the FBI in connection with the federal investigation. Suggs had been assigned to a campaign job handling administrative paperwork.

Donors have contributed over $650,000 to a defense fund established in the wake of the Turkey probe to cover legal fees for Adams as the investigations continue. Adams’ campaign has already spent over $430,000 of the fund, with a significant portion going to a law firm that represents him in the FBI investigation.

Contributors to the defense fund include prominent figures such as billionaire Leonard Blavatnik, cryptocurrency tycoon Brock Pierce, and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Despite the setbacks and scandals, Adams remains focused on his reelection campaign as he navigates through the ongoing investigations.
