The United States military announced that it successfully destroyed more than 80 attack drones and six ballistic missiles aimed at Israel from Iran and Yemen. US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that Iran’s actions pose a threat to regional stability and the safety of US and coalition forces. This comes after Iran’s first-ever attack on Israeli territory, in response to a suspected Israeli attack on its embassy in Syria. Most of the drones and missiles were intercepted and shot down by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, along with support from the US and its partners.
US President Joe Biden commended US forces for their efforts and reaffirmed America’s unwavering support for Israel’s defense. However, he emphasized that the US would not participate in any retaliatory actions by Israel against Iran. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated US commitment to protecting troops and partners in the region, supporting Israel’s defense, and maintaining regional stability.
The situation has raised concerns of a potential full-scale conflict between Israel and Iran, leading to calls for restraint from neighboring countries and major powers. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the escalating tensions in the Middle East and called for de-escalation to prevent a devastating war. The region remains on edge as efforts continue to diffuse the situation and prevent further conflict.
