A military base in Iraq housing a pro-Iranian militia was damaged in an explosion, killing one and wounding eight. The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) militia blamed an attack, amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran. The PMF is part of a network of Iranian proxies in the Middle East, targeting US personnel in Iraq to force their withdrawal. The Pentagon denied involvement in the incident.
The conflict between Israel and Iran escalated recently, with direct attacks on each other’s territory. Israel responded to an Iranian drone and missile barrage by conducting a presumed strike near Isfahan. Iran threatened a “maximum” response to significant Israeli attacks on its interests. The long-running confrontation intensified following Israeli strikes on Iranian military commanders in Damascus.
The explosion at the Kalso military base, south of Baghdad, occurred early Saturday, with investigations ongoing. The PMF’s chief of staff visited the injured in the hospital. The cause of the blast is under investigation by Iraqi military authorities, who reported no presence of drones or fighter jets at the time. The US Central Command denied carrying out airstrikes in Iraq.
As tensions continue to rise between Iran and Israel, the situation remains precarious with the potential for further retaliation. Both countries have been engaged in a shadow war for years, but recent direct attacks indicate a heightened level of conflict that could have serious consequences for the region.
