Taiwan Experiences 80 Earthquakes, 6.3 Magnitude Tremors Rattle Buildings

Taiwan experienced a series of over 80 earthquakes, with the strongest measuring 6.3 magnitude, hitting the east coast late Monday night and into Tuesday morning. The quakes primarily affected the rural county of Hualien, where a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake had struck on April 3 causing 14 casualties. The tremors also caused buildings in the capital Taipei to shake, raising concerns about potential damage.

Thankfully, there were no reports of casualties from the recent earthquakes. However, a hotel in Hualien, which had been damaged during the previous quake, was noted to be leaning on its side. Taiwan, located at the meeting point of two tectonic plates, is no stranger to seismic activity and has been experiencing aftershocks since the April earthquake.

Past earthquakes in Taiwan have resulted in significant loss of life, including over 100 casualties in a southern Taiwan quake in 2016 and over 2,000 deaths in a 7.3 magnitude quake in 1999. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents to stay alert and prepared for any further seismic activity.
