The UN and its partners are providing support to Kenya in response to heavy rains that have caused widespread flooding and more than 170 deaths since mid-March. The floods have affected over 190,000 people and displaced 150,000, causing damage to livestock and cropland. Further rain is expected, exacerbating the situation.
In addition to the flooding in Kenya, the UN agencies have also mourned the loss of nearly 50 migrants who died while trying to reach the Canary Islands. Drowning remains a leading cause of migrant deaths, and the journey across the Mediterranean Sea has resulted in numerous fatalities. The agencies emphasize the need for safe and regular pathways for migrants to prevent further loss of life.
In Myanmar’s Rakhine State, the UN has expressed concern over the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, particularly in the context of ongoing conflict in the region. The breakdown of a ceasefire has escalated tensions, with 15 out of 17 townships now affected by violence. The UN calls for efforts to address systemic discrimination and impunity in Rakhine State to establish a sustainable solution to the crisis.
The UN has condemned all forms of violence against civilians in Myanmar and stresses the need for the protection of civilians and aid workers in accordance with international humanitarian law. The situation in Rakhine State poses a significant threat to the Rohingya population, who are at particular risk of being targeted by multiple armed factions. The UN urges action to prevent further harm to the Rohingya and all civilians caught in the conflict.
