Ruchika Sharma, a 33-year-old historian and former professor based in New Delhi, has found a unique way to combine her passion for history with her love for makeup. Sharma runs a successful YouTube channel called Eyeshadow & Etihaas, where she creates videos discussing historical events while doing her makeup. Despite facing threats and abuse for her content, Sharma has amassed a large following of over 20,000 subscribers on YouTube and 30,000 followers on another platform.
Sharma’s interest in history dates back to her childhood, where stories of partition from her grandparents sparked her curiosity. After completing her PhD and working in a corporate job briefly, she realized her true passion lay in history and pursued her master’s and PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Sharma’s unconventional combination of history lessons and makeup tutorials gained popularity after her students suggested she start a YouTube channel.
With more than 200 videos in just over two years, Sharma uses her platform to debunk historical myths and present accurate information to counter the current political discourse in India. Her videos explore topics like the destruction of Nalanda University and challenge popular narratives perpetuated by the Hindu right-wing. Despite facing backlash for her content, Sharma remains undeterred and sees her channel as a way to educate and inform her audience.
