Celebrating Mother’s Day with a Loved One Living with Dementia

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has shared five tips for families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia ahead of Mother’s Day in order to help them celebrate a joyful day with their loved ones. Since women make up two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to ensure that Mother’s Day is celebrated in a dementia-friendly manner. One of the tips includes making your own Mother’s Day card and reading it out loud to your loved one to uplift both of your spirits.

Other tips include creating new memories using a person-centered approach, reminiscing together with old photos, adapting old favorites, and taking advantage of the therapeutic benefits of flowers. AFA recommends purchasing a bouquet of non-toxic flowers such as roses, orchids, or sunflowers to stimulate the brain, improve mood, and reduce agitation.

AFA’s Helpline, staffed by licensed social workers trained in dementia care, is available seven days a week to provide additional information and support for families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. By following these tips and seeking support from the AFA Helpline, families can make Mother’s Day a special and memorable occasion for their loved ones living with dementia.
