Knoxville’s latest dining establishment, Billie Rae’s BBQ, carries on the tradition of renowned Black pit masters

Eugene and Patrice Chandler, childhood sweethearts from East Knoxville, have fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening Billie Rae’s BBQ and Soul Food in the neighborhood where they grew up. The restaurant is a tribute to Eugene’s mother, whose dream of owning a chili restaurant inspired them to start their own business. Patrice, a teacher turned restaurateur, draws on her family’s history of successful business ownership to support her husband in this new venture.

Billie Rae’s BBQ is the only Black-owned brick and mortar BBQ restaurant on Magnolia Avenue, continuing a legacy of Black-owned BBQ spots in Knoxville. Eugene’s passion for smoking barbecue led them to the perfect location with a pre-existing smoke pit on Magnolia Avenue, where iconic Black-owned restaurants like Scrugg’s BBQ once operated. The Chandlers see their restaurant as a way to honor the Black business owners who came before them.

Despite facing challenges in starting their business, including navigating red tape and a lack of resources, the Chandlers have created a menu filled with smoked barbecue and soul food classics like ribs, brisket, and collard greens. They plan to introduce online ordering and delivery services in June to expand their reach in the community.

Overall, Billie Rae’s BBQ and Soul Food represents a testament to the perseverance and dedication of the Chandler family in fulfilling their dreams and honoring their roots in East Knoxville. By providing delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere, they hope to carry on the tradition of Black-owned businesses in the neighborhood and serve their community for years to come.
