The deadline to make your state-issued identification card or driver’s license Real ID compliant is May 7, 2025, after which you will not be able to fly domestically without it. The Real ID Act was initially passed in 2005 to set security standards for state-issued IDs. Due to backlogged transactions caused by the pandemic, the enforcement deadline was extended to 2025. Federal agencies, including TSA, will only accept IDs that meet these standards after the deadline. You can also use alternatives like a passport or trusted traveler card. It takes about two weeks to get a Real ID from the Motor Vehicle Department. Enhanced driver’s licenses are acceptable alternatives in certain states. All Real IDs will have a stamp indicating that it meets federal standards. The appearance of the stamp may vary by state. Your Real ID will contain the same information as your driver’s license, with the added seal in the right-hand corner. Make sure to get your Real ID before the deadline to ensure you can continue to travel domestically.
