‘Your case is still being pursued: Victim refuses to give up despite cold trail’

Kathie Rottler’s long journey for justice began in 1975 when she, her sister, and a friend were attacked by a man who raped her sister and stabbed all three of them. Years later, Kathie was still haunted by the memories and sought the help of Detective Sgt. David Ellison in 2018. Despite the case not fitting the parameters of his unit, Ellison promised to do what he could to find answers.

Ellison, who had spent much of his career investigating cold cases, faced challenges with the old evidence and lack of DNA testing at the time of the crime. However, with advancements in technology, Ellison was able to submit the evidence for DNA testing in early 2019. The waiting game began as Kathie anxiously awaited updates on the progress of the case.

As months turned into years, Kathie grew frustrated with the lack of communication and progress in the case. In a heartfelt email to Ellison in July 2021, she expressed her disappointment and desperation for closure. Ellison, understanding her frustration, reassured her that progress was being made, but the lab prioritized current violent crime cases.

Despite the challenges and setbacks, Ellison and his team continued to work on Kathie’s case, offering her hope that justice would eventually be served. The case symbolized the larger issue of unsolved cold cases that haunted families for decades. The commitment of Ellison and his team to seek justice for Kathie and others like her highlighted the dedication and struggles of those working in cold case units.
