CNN announced that they will be hosting a debate between President Joe Biden and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at the network’s Atlanta studios on June 27. This debate will have no audience present and moderators will be announced at a later date. Additionally, ABC News will host a second debate on September 10, which both candidates have agreed to participate in.
Biden had called for two debates before early voting for the November election begins, and Trump responded that he would do it. Biden accepted CNN’s invitation for the June debate and Trump has also agreed to participate. The Biden campaign broke precedent by notifying the Commission on Presidential Debates that they would not participate in their debates and instead suggested that news organizations should host the debates.
The Trump campaign has proposed additional debates in June, July, August, and September, focusing on topics such as immigration policy, electric vehicles, inflation, taxes, and foreign policy. CNN stated that to qualify for participation in their debate, a candidate must meet certain criteria, including reaching a 270 electoral vote threshold and receiving at least 15% in four separate national polls.
Overall, the upcoming debates between Biden and Trump are expected to provide voters with timely and relevant information to help inform their decisions before the election. This marks a shift in the usual debate schedule and format, with both campaigns proposing new ways to engage with voters and showcase their policies and visions for the country.
