After months of uncertainty, the Sterilization Services of Tennessee facility in South Memphis, known for emitting a cancer-causing gas, has reportedly shut down. The closure comes after pressure from the Memphis Community Against Pollution (MCAP) and other environmental advocates who have long been pushing for the facility to relocate.
Despite the lack of direct communication from SST regarding their closure, the company has not submitted any new permit renewal applications to the Shelby County Health Department. Community members in South Memphis, who have suffered from toxic chemical pollution for decades, are relieved by the news but also seeking reparations for their exposure to harmful emissions.
MCAP and their legal representatives have criticized the health department’s management of ethylene oxide (EtO) emissions as inadequate, prompting them to take legal action. A class action lawsuit filed against SST seeks financial and medical support for community members, including comprehensive cancer screenings and preventive care measures.
While celebrating the closure of SST, community members are now looking towards a sustainable future for the vacant facility. MCAP President KeShaun Pearson emphasizes that the fight for environmental justice in Memphis is far from over, as there are still 17 toxic release facilities in the area. The hope is to reform these industrial properties into environmentally friendly spaces that benefit the entire community.
