Foreign Minister of Taiwan alleges that China and Russia are backing each other’s ‘territorial ambitions’

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Taiwan’s outgoing Foreign Minister Joseph Wu outlined the growing partnership between Russia and China, emphasizing the need for democracies to push back against authoritarian states that threaten their rights and sovereignty. Wu highlighted Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the reaffirmed partnership between Putin and Xi Jinping as examples of authoritarian expansionism.

Wu called on Western powers to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia to send a message that democracies will defend one another. He also warned about the potential for conflict in the South China Sea, where China’s territorial ambitions pose a significant threat. Wu emphasized the importance of countering China and Russia’s military assertiveness in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, urging democracies to align to protect their interests.

As Taiwan prepares for the inauguration of its new president, Lai Ching-te, on Monday, Wu emphasized the island’s commitment to maintaining peace and the status quo in relations with Beijing. He expressed confidence in Taiwan’s close ties with the U.S., regardless of the outcome of the November presidential election. Wu’s tenure as foreign minister has been marked by challenges, including China’s efforts to isolate Taipei diplomatically and increase military pressure on the island.

Despite these challenges, Wu has worked to strengthen unofficial ties with European and Asian nations and the U.S. as Taiwan’s strongest unofficial ally. He highlighted the growing sympathy and caution among European nations towards Taiwan’s cause, as they become more aware of China’s actions in the region. Wu stressed the importance of democracies standing together against authoritarian influence in the Indo-Pacific.
