Gunmen have killed an Afghan citizen and three Spanish tourists in Bamyan province, Afghanistan, injuring seven others. The Taliban government condemned the attack and pledged to punish the criminals. No group has claimed responsibility. The attack took place in a popular tourist destination known for its UNESCO World Heritage Site and the remains of destroyed Buddha statues. Since retaking control of Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban have vowed to restore security and promote tourism. This incident is the deadliest attack since the Taliban’s return to power. The European Union and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed their condolences and support for the victims and their families. The attack comes amidst ongoing instability and heightened security concerns in Afghanistan, with ISIL previously claiming an attack on Chinese citizens in Kabul. Security forces have arrested four suspects in connection with the Bamyan attack as investigations continue.
