On Sunday, the Tennessee softball team’s rally fell short as they were defeated 4-1 by Alabama in the NCAA super regional. The No. 3 seed Lady Vols struggled offensively throughout the game, with Alabama taking a four-run lead in the first inning before a three-hour weather delay halted play. Despite a late push in the seventh inning, Tennessee was unable to overcome the deficit and fell just short of a second consecutive trip to the Women’s College World Series.
Pitcher Payton Gottshall had a difficult start, allowing four runs before the weather delay. Karlyn Pickens stepped in to pitch for Tennessee, holding Alabama scoreless for four innings. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Lady Vols struggled to get their offense going until late in the game.
In the seventh inning, Tennessee attempted a rally with multiple hits but ultimately left the bases loaded, ending their season in Knoxville. Head coach Karen Weekly praised the team’s effort but acknowledged that their offensive struggles proved costly.
Overall, the Lady Vols had a successful season, finishing as SEC regular-season champions. Although they fell short in the super regional, the team showed resilience and determination throughout the year. Tennessee fans can look forward to continued success from the softball program in the future.
