Michael Ansara was a protestor during the Vietnam War and sees similarities between that time and the upcoming 2024 election, with antiwar protests, a contentious election, and Democrats heading to Chicago to select their nominee. Ansara regrets not supporting Humphrey in 1968 and believes they could have ended the war if they had pushed him to do so. Many former antiwar activists are now more pragmatic and see differences between the Vietnam War and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Some, like Jan Barry, plan to vote “uncommitted” to protest Biden’s Israel policies, while others, like Miles Rapoport, see Biden as working towards ending the war. The older protestors are hesitant to advise the younger generation and doubt they will listen. Some, like Michael James, are concerned about the potential for fascism under Trump and are now rooting for Biden and the Democrats, despite their past apathy towards electoral politics. Ultimately, the former activists hope that the younger generation will learn from their mistakes and avoid the consequences of their past actions by participating in the political process.
