Low-income Tennessee parents will soon have access to free monthly diapers for their children under two, thanks to a new program approved by federal regulators. Starting in August, the state will cover the cost of 100 diapers per month for kids enrolled in either TennCare or CoverKids. This initiative aims to ease financial burdens for families and ensure the well-being of Tennessee’s youngest members.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, in approving the program, highlighted the importance of an adequate diaper supply in preventing diaper rashes and urinary tract infections. This program, the first of its kind in the nation, expands diaper benefits to all infants and toddlers under two in the state’s health insurance programs.
The diaper benefit is part of Gov. Bill Lee’s “Strong Families Initiative,” which was created in response to Tennessee’s strict abortion ban. The initiative also includes funding for crisis pregnancy centers and adoption aid. However, earlier this year, GOP lawmakers rejected a bill that would have exempted infant diapers, wipes, and formula from sales taxes for all parents in the state.
