Israel continues bombing Rafah following deaths at tent camp

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue fighting in Gaza until victory is achieved, following an airstrike that led to a massive fire in a tent camp in Rafah, resulting in the deaths of at least 45 people. The airstrike, one of the deadliest incidents in the eight-month-old war, prompted international condemnation and a call by the International Court of Justice for Israel to halt military operations in Rafah. Israel has continued its assault on Rafah, claiming it is necessary to root out Hamas.

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting over the Rafah strike, as the Biden administration faces pressure to curb support for Israel’s military operations. Reports indicate that Israel is conducting precise operations in Rafah based on intelligence, leading to heavy bombardment in certain areas.

In response to the ongoing conflict, Ireland, Norway, and Spain are set to formally recognize a Palestinian state, a move that has drawn anger from Israel. The recognitions are symbolic gestures aimed at pushing for a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency reports that about 1 million people have fled Rafah in the past three weeks.

The situation in Gaza remains tense, with ongoing military operations and international pressure on Israel to halt its actions. Netanyahu’s commitment to continue the fight until victory is achieved sets the stage for further escalation in the conflict.
