Tennessee State Museum Celebrates Statehood Day with Miss Tennessee Brandee Mills
In celebration of Tennessee’s 228th birthday on June 1st, the Tennessee State Museum is hosting a variety of free, family-friendly activities at the Bicentennial Mall State Park Campus. The museum will open at 10 a.m. to the public and offer highlight tours, Storytime with Miss Tennessee Brandee Mills, period games on the lawn, and a cupcake celebration.
Miss Tennessee Brandee Mills will be reading “What the Ladybug Heard” by Julia Donaldson during Story Time at 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s Gallery. The cupcake celebration, featuring Mills reading the Tennessee State poem “Oh Tennessee, My Tennessee” by Commander William Porter Lawrence, will take place at noon in the Grand Hall. Activities on the lawn will continue until 2 p.m.
Additionally, the State Capitol will offer guided tours by museum staff from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and self-guided tours are available at any time. The Tennessee State Library and Archives will also join in the celebration, showcasing Tennessee’s founding documents and new exhibits, as well as hosting living history interpreters and indoor and outdoor activities including a scavenger hunt.
Visitors can also witness Tennessee’s three original constitutions, displayed and guarded by the Tennessee Highway Patrol Honor Guard during the opening ceremony at the Library & Archives at 11 a.m. Behind-the-scenes tours starting at 11:30 a.m. will showcase the robotic retrieval system and blast freezer.
