Nashville Mayor advances $6.9 billion transportation upgrade plan

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell has proposed a transportation improvement program called the “Choose How You Move Plan”, which is now up for consideration by the Metro Council. The plan aims to address the city’s growing transit needs by investing in new sidewalks, smart signalized intersections, improved bus service, and increased security for the WeGo bus system. If approved, the plan would raise sales tax in Davidson County by half a cent and would be funded through a combination of bonds, state, and federal grants.

Residents like Leslie Carter and Natasha Briggs have expressed support for the plan, citing issues with traffic congestion and unreliable bus service. Carter, a Nashville native, emphasized the importance of improving transit for the safety of bus riders. The proposal will be presented to voters on the November 5 ballot if approved by the Metro Council and the Davidson County Election Commission.

The plan, which is based on feedback from over 66,000 ideas submitted by Nashvillians, aims to address the city’s transit challenges over the next 15 years. The first reading of the ordinance will take place on June 18th at the Metro Council meeting. Supporters of the plan are hopeful that it will receive the necessary votes to move forward and make Nashville’s transit system safer and more efficient for residents and visitors alike.
