Understanding how flight demonstrations cater to individuals with autism

Breeze Airways partnered with Autism Double-Checked to host a boarding demonstration for travelers with autism on April 30 in Provo, Utah. The exercise aimed to familiarize individuals on the autism spectrum with air travel, providing them with the opportunity to experience the boarding process in a supportive environment. The event was part of a series called “Accessible Travel” focusing on the travel industry’s preparedness to welcome travelers with disabilities.

The boarding demonstration allowed participants to practice boarding a plane, interacting with flight attendants, and experiencing in-flight procedures. Breeze Airways flight attendants received training on how to interact with autistic passengers and provide necessary accommodations. The event was attended by individuals with autism, their families, and volunteers from the airline. Participants found the experience helpful in preparing them for future travel, reducing anxiety and increasing comfort levels.

In addition to the boarding exercises, Breeze Airways has committed to being more supportive of travelers with autism. They will publish a travel guide, institute an autism concierge helpline, and accept Autism Double-Checked’s autism passport to facilitate smoother travel experiences for individuals on the autism spectrum. The airline aims to make accommodations for travelers with disabilities commonplace in the industry.

Overall, the event was a positive step towards making air travel more inclusive and accessible for individuals with autism. Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to practice and prepare for future trips, while Breeze Airways highlighted its commitment to supporting travelers with disabilities.
