Tennessee school voucher bill at risk of not passing this session

The school voucher bill pushed by Governor Bill Lee is currently hanging by a thread in the Tennessee State Legislature. While some say it is ‘on life support,’ Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson insists that the bill is still very much alive in the state Senate. However, the House and Senate remain at odds, particularly on the issue of testing, with the House wanting to reduce testing while the Senate has no issue with the current testing system.

Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton acknowledges the differences in opinions between the two chambers and is uncertain about the bill’s fate. With the bill being rolled over for the last month and no budget allocation for it in the House budget, the chances of its passage are dwindling.

Despite the challenges, Johnson remains optimistic about the bill’s passage but acknowledges the complexities and strong emotions surrounding the issue of school choice. Both chambers are set to pass their budgets on Tuesday, making it difficult to make changes to the bill once the budgets are approved.

Time is running out, and the clock is ticking for the school voucher bill. The fate of the bill remains uncertain as negotiations continue, but its chances of passing are becoming increasingly slim as key deadlines approach.
