California doctor who pushed family off cliff will not face trial

Dr. Dharmesh Patel, a California doctor, was accused of intentionally driving his Tesla off a cliff along the Pacific Coast Highway with his wife and two young children inside. He was charged with three counts of attempted murder in January 2023 but has now been granted a mental health diversion instead of standing trial. The San Mateo County Superior Court judge ruled that Patel’s major depressive disorder made him eligible for the diversion program, where he will undergo a two-year mental health outpatient treatment program.

Patel’s attorney argued that he should not be considered a criminal and instead be placed in the mental health program. Patel’s doctors diagnosed him with schizoaffective disorder in addition to major depressive disorder. If released, Patel will have to stay at his parent’s residence in Belmont, California, wear a GPS monitor, surrender his driver’s license and passport, and only leave for treatment or court appearances.

Patel drove off the cliff at Devil’s Slide, a rocky and steep area on the Pacific Coast Highway, and emergency responders were able to rescue the family. Authorities believed the incident was intentional after reviewing evidence and Patel’s wife stated he had been depressed before the crash. His wife has expressed support for him and does not want him prosecuted.

Overall, Patel will avoid jail time but will be required to undergo mental health treatment as a part of the diversion program.
