The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees has approved the first tuition increase in four years, with a 2% hike for in-state students and a 4% increase for out-of-state students effective in fall 2024. Chancellor Donde Plowman cited rising costs and the need for high-quality education programs as reasons behind the modest increase. The board also approved fee increases for technology, transportation, and online learning infrastructure to enhance the student experience. The tuition and fee increases will support institutional scholarships, expanded academic offerings, and student services, as well as additional capacity in instructional programs.
Other changes approved by the board include modifications to the guaranteed admissions policy, renaming the College of Music to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music, and entering into lease agreements to enhance the student experience and support enrollment growth. The board also voted to confer honorary degrees to Lamar Alexander and Rita Geier.
The University of Tennessee had previously worked to keep tuition flat for many years but found it necessary to implement a modest increase to cover rising costs and maintain high-quality education programs. The decision to increase tuition was met with careful consideration to balance affordability and the university’s financial needs. Students can expect the changes to go into effect in the upcoming academic year as the university aims to continue providing a meaningful student experience.
