Abortion in the U.S. after Dobbs: A Tennessee Lookout at Two Years

Abortion rights have been a long and contentious issue in the United States since the mid-19th century, when restrictions began being implemented. Despite efforts by anti-abortion activists, the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision provided constitutionally protected access to abortion for almost 50 years.

However, two years ago, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, allowing 21 states to severely restrict or ban abortion. This has led to a spike in abortions and other issues related to reproductive health.

Recent data shows that more abortions occurred in 2020 and 2021 compared to previous years, and the Guttmacher Institute reports a record number of abortions in 2023. In addition, there has been an increase in sterilization procedures among women post-Dobbs.

Despite the push for abortion bans, public opinion has shifted in favor of abortion rights, with 63% of Americans supporting legal access to abortion. In states where abortion access was put to a vote, pro-choice positions have prevailed. However, some states continue to double down on abortion restrictions, which could have negative consequences for women’s health and the availability of medical care.

As the 2024 elections approach, former President Donald Trump has indicated a continued commitment to restricting abortion rights if he is elected. This comes at a time when the U.S. already lags behind other developed nations in maternal mortality rates.

Ultimately, the debate over abortion rights reflects larger societal issues around healthcare access, family support, and women’s autonomy. The upcoming elections will be a crucial moment in determining the future of reproductive rights in America.
