Richard Rojem Jr. is set to be executed in Oklahoma for the rape and murder of his 7-year-old former stepdaughter, Layla Dawn Cummings. Rojem, who has maintained his innocence, was convicted in 1985. Layla’s mother stated that her daughter’s life was stolen from her. Rojem’s execution will be the second in as many days in the nation and the ninth in the country this year. Rojem and Mindy Cummings, Layla’s mother, were recently divorced at the time of the murder. Rojem had a history of criminal activity, including the rape of two teenage girls. Despite Rojem claiming innocence, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board rejected his clemency request. Rojem has appealed his death sentence several times over the years but has been unsuccessful. His execution is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT and will be done by lethal injection using a three-drug protocol. The witness list for the execution is confidential, but selected members of the news media, including a reporter from The Oklahoman, will be present. Rojem’s final meal will consist of a Little Caeser’s pizza, salt and crushed red pepper packets, Vernors Ginger Ale, and vanilla ice cream.
