The lawsuit includes claims of physical and psychological abuse, such as staff encouraging children to beat up other children, denying medical care, and placing kids with mental health issues in solitary confinement for extended periods. State Rep. John Ragan expressed shock at the allegations, emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable members of society.
Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. John Ray Clemmons criticized the Bill Lee Administration for changing commissioners in response to such stories, without implementing concrete solutions. He called for more attention to be paid to children in state custody, highlighting the troubling situation and the need for increased state investment. Both lawmakers are calling for accountability and swift action to address these issues and prevent further abuse and neglect within the DCS.
The Department of Children’s Services and the Attorney General’s office are aware of the lawsuit but have not provided further comment at this time.
