A possible tornado caused significant damage at Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) campus in Murfreesboro. The tornado touched down near the Dollar General off Medical Center Parkway around 3:00 p.m., with photos and videos showing downed trees and damaged cars in the area. A video captured a football equipment trailer being tossed near Floyd Stadium and Reese Field. Fortunately, MTSU confirmed that there were no injuries reported. The National Weather Service will assess if the damage was indeed caused by a tornado.
As of 3:50 p.m., approximately 1,200 power outages were reported in Rutherford County, with traffic light outages reported by the Murfreesboro Police Department. MPD provided traffic control at affected intersections, with some still flashing lights at Cason Lane and Old Fort (Hwy 99) and officers directing traffic at Old Fort and Bridge. Additionally, trees or tree limbs were reported down in various parts of the city, with city street workers clearing debris and placing signs for flooding under the CSX Bridge on W. College Street.
Despite the damage and power outages, MTSU and the surrounding community are coming together to assess and address the aftermath of the possible tornado. Authorities are working to restore power and clear debris to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Murfreesboro.
