PAC involvement in 5th district U.S. Congress race in Middle Tennessee turns to negativity • Tennessee Lookout

A political action committee supporting Metro Nashville Councilmember Courtney Johnston has shifted its strategy in the Republican primary to attack U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles in Middle Tennessee districts spanning Nashville to Columbia. Conservatives With Character is questioning Ogles’ credentials as an economist and his support for a sales tax increase in Maury County during his mayoral term. The group is backed by moderate Republicans and has received significant funding to support Johnston in the race. Ogles, who is running for reelection, has faced scrutiny over his resume and campaign finance reports. He recently filed articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris. Johnston, who has been critical of fellow council members, has raised over $700,000 for the primary. Ogles won his current seat in 2022 after Democrats lost control of the district due to gerrymandering. The House Freedom Action Fund has also spent money on the campaign, with $50,000 supporting Ogles and $35,000 opposing Johnston. The election is set for Thursday, with spending by Conservatives With Character expected to reach $1.2 million by then.
