Disgraced BBC News anchor Huw Edwards has been charged with making indecent images of children, according to UK police. Edwards, the host of the BBC’s flagship “News at Ten” program, faces three charges related to alleged activity between December 2020 and April 2022. He is accused of having nearly 40 photos on WhatsApp, including explicit and erotic imagery involving children. If convicted, Edwards could face up to 10 years in prison.
The 62-year-old journalist, who resigned from the BBC in April 2023 after 40 years, will appear in court to face these charges. Edwards, who was arrested in November 2023, could receive a maximum prison sentence of six months and an unlimited fine. The charges were filed following a Metropolitan Police investigation into images shared in a WhatsApp chat.
This news comes shortly after the BBC released its annual report, revealing salaries of top employees, with Edwards being the highest-paid newsreader. Despite being suspended for most of the previous year, Edwards received a significant pay rise. Last year, his wife revealed that he was the mystery broadcaster who allegedly paid a teenager for explicit photos.
In a statement issued on Edwards’ behalf by his wife, she expressed concern for his mental well-being and the family’s privacy amidst the recent reporting. Edwards, known for covering landmark royal events during his tenure as host of “News at Ten,” is a well-known face on British television.
