Tennessee District 73 Republican candidates, incumbent Rep. Chris Todd and Jimmy Harris, are neck and neck in fundraising efforts as the primary election approaches on Aug. 1. Todd, who has held the seat since 2018, is facing competition for the first time from former Madison County Mayor Harris. With no Democratic contender, the primary election will determine the outcome.
While Todd has raised $187,649 from individual donors and political action committees, Harris has received $186,238 solely from individual donors, refusing money from special interest groups. However, interest groups have independently spent $51,651 in support of Todd’s campaign, including Americans for Prosperity, a pro-school voucher group.
Todd and Harris have differing views on school voucher programs, with Todd supporting education savings accounts and scholarship programs while Harris is concerned about potential impacts on local school systems and taxpayers. Todd has also received donations from various PACs, businesses, and political leaders, while Harris has focused on fundraising within District 73 and Madison County.
As the primary election nears, interest groups’ influence and candidates’ fundraising efforts are key factors in the race for Tennessee District 73. Both Todd and Harris are vying for the support of voters as they navigate a competitive and closely-watched campaign.
