Harris to be the only candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination on virtual roll call • Tennessee Lookout

Vice President Kamala Harris has been named the sole candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, the Democratic National Committee announced on Tuesday. After President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, Harris was the only candidate to receive the necessary 300 delegates petitioning for her nomination. Following Biden’s endorsement of Harris, the majority of delegates quickly declared their support for her.

A total of 3,923 Democratic delegates petitioned for Harris to be the presidential nominee, with 99% of them supporting her, making her the presumptive Democratic nominee. Harris is set to officially become the party’s nominee during a virtual roll call scheduled to begin on Thursday. The roll call, a departure from the traditional in-person event, will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time over two days.

Harris is preparing to campaign in Philadelphia on August 6 with her running mate, who has yet to be named. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is reportedly on Harris’ shortlist for vice president, along with other candidates such as Arizona U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The campaign swing will also include stops in western Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, North Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Support for Harris has been strong among state parties, elected officials, and party leaders since Biden exited the race. The DNC praised the overwhelming backing for Harris, with DNC Chair Jaime Harrison stating that Democratic delegates from across the nation have shown their support for Harris as the presumptive nominee.
