Longtime gun control advocate advances in Tennessee House primary elections while incumbent Republicans face tough contests
A longtime gun control advocate seeking a Tennessee House seat in Nashville advanced in Thursday’s primary elections while an Oak Ridge Republican incumbent lost his seat, with two Republican races too close to call. In Franklin, a pro-school voucher candidate backed by Gov. Bill Lee held a narrow lead, while the chairwoman of the state House finance committee trailed in Chattanooga in races that had not been called by publication time.

The primary saw various challengers vying for seats in different districts, with notable wins and losses. Schoo voucher advocate Lee Reeves narrowly led in Franklin, while small business owner Michele Reneau held a lead over incumbent Patsy Hazlewood in District 27 outside Chattanooga. In District 60, Shaundelle Brooks, a gun control advocate, won the Democratic primary over Tyler Brasher. In District 33, John Ragan lost his bid for reelection to Rick Scarbrough.

Incumbent Rep. Chris Todd held onto his seat in District 73, defeating former Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris, while Rusty Grills beat James “Bubba” Cobb in District 77. In District 80, incumbent Johnny Shaw won the Democratic primary.

These primary outcomes set the stage for the general election, with notable candidates facing off in November to secure their seats in the Tennessee House.
