The latest #WeCount report reveals that the number of abortions in the United States is on the rise, with telehealth abortion care accounting for 20% of all procedures in the first three months of 2024. The report, compiled by a group of researchers from the Society of Family Planning, estimates that over 19,700 telehealth abortions were performed each month during this period.
States like New York, California, Virginia, Kansas, and Pennsylvania saw significant increases in the average number of abortions compared to the previous year. The use of telehealth for abortion care continues to grow, with shield laws in five states protecting healthcare providers from legal repercussions when assisting patients from states with abortion restrictions.
Dr. Alison Norris, co-chair of the group, emphasizes that restrictions on abortion are not evidence-based and are a barrier to access to essential healthcare. While the number of telehealth abortions has increased, most procedures still occur in person due to logistical and personal reasons. Norris points to a rise in national abortion rates since 2017 and suggests that factors such as the removal of barriers and increased awareness of support resources may be contributing to this trend.
Despite the progress in telehealth access for individuals in states with strict abortion laws, Norris stresses the importance of advocating for comprehensive and equitable healthcare access for all individuals. She urges continued efforts to address restrictions and ensure that everyone, regardless of their location, can receive timely and safe healthcare.
