Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made his first solo campaign appearance as the Democratic vice presidential candidate in Los Angeles, emphasizing worker-friendly policies and union support. Speaking to members of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, Walz highlighted Vice President Kamala Harris’ efforts to prioritize workers and her work with President Joe Biden.
Referring to himself as the first former union member on a presidential ticket since Ronald Reagan, Walz praised Harris for her dedication to ensuring families thrive. He discussed his own efforts as governor, making it easier to form unions and strengthen worker protections.
Walz called on organized labor to mobilize Democratic voters for the upcoming election, contrasting the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, and his running mate Sen. J.D. Vance’s anti-union stances. He criticized Trump’s support for restricting union organizing and reducing overtime, tying him to the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 goals.
In addition to advocating for worker rights, Walz touched on broader issues such as reproductive rights, book bans, and tax cuts for the wealthy. He defended his military service record against Republican criticisms and closed with a message of gratitude for all who served.
As the campaign heats up, Walz’s strategy focuses on mobilizing union support and highlighting the stark contrast between Democratic and Republican policies towards workers. With a call to action for Democratic voters, Walz aims to make a difference in an election that could be decided by a slim margin.
