Minnesota Governor Tim Walz accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Walz, a native of a small town in Nebraska, showcased his appeal as a candidate who can fuse a middle-class image with a progressive record. He criticized the Republican alternative led by former President Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, emphasizing the Democrats’ focus on freedom to make a better life for all Americans.
Walz, a former high school teacher, coach, and Army National Guardsman, highlighted his record as governor in Minnesota, including progressive policy wins such as guaranteeing paid leave, providing school meals, and expanding reproductive rights. He framed these policies as in line with traditional American values and criticized the Republican agenda for its alleged threats to Social Security, Medicare, Obamacare, and abortion rights.
Throughout his speech, Walz emphasized the importance of expanding freedom and promoting common-sense policies, including gun safety measures. He urged Democratic delegates to work tirelessly until Election Day to secure victory for the Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and himself. The night also featured a surprise appearance by TV talk show legend Oprah Winfrey, who endorsed Harris as a barrier-breaking candidate with decency and respect.
Walz’s acceptance speech energized the Democratic delegates from Minnesota, who chanted in support of the Harris-Walz ticket. The evening concluded with a performance of “Let’s Go Crazy” by Minnesota native Prince, further showcasing the state’s pride in Walz’s nomination.
