Chinese authorities are taking action to address the issue of sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) in Tesla vehicles by banning the one-pedal driving mode starting in 2026. This decision comes after numerous reports of Tesla crashes allegedly caused by the one-pedal driving feature, which makes it difficult for drivers to control the acceleration of the vehicle. In response to these concerns, Tesla was forced to change the default stopping mode in China from Hold to Creep, which requires drivers to press the brake pedal for a complete stop.
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is set to release a draft of new regulations titled “Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems” to formalize the ban on one-pedal driving. The draft specifies that the braking effect achieved by releasing the accelerator pedal in forward gear should not decelerate the vehicle to a stop. This move is aimed at improving safety and preventing future SUA incidents in China.
This decision by Chinese regulators follows a series of high-profile SUA crashes involving Tesla vehicles in various countries. While Tesla’s control logic is designed to prevent acceleration when the brake pedal is depressed, experts have raised concerns about the potential risks associated with one-pedal driving. The ban on this driving mode is expected to enhance safety standards and address the concerns of both regulators and Tesla owners in China.
