Research on Childlessness Sheds Light on Reproductive Rights as They Return to the Ballot • Tennessee Lookout

The U.S. is seeing a decline in fertility rates, with almost half of adults under 50 expressing no plans for child rearing. Reasons for this shift include concerns about the state of the world, economic factors, environmental sustainability, negative childhood experiences, and medical issues. Despite potential negative economic and social outcomes associated with declining fertility rates, coercive right-wing policies aimed at increasing the birth rate are unpopular and ineffective.

Effective policy making to support child rearing includes offering flexible employment hours, tax breaks, incentives, and financial subsidies for families, paid leave policies, and support for affordable housing, healthcare, and childcare. Republican solutions to declining fertility, such as restricting access to sex education and abortion, are not only unpopular but also fail to address the root causes of the issue.

Former President Donald Trump and Ohio U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance have supported anti-abortion crusades and cultural browbeating, respectively. In Tennessee, Republicans have set policies resulting in a low fertility rate, high maternal and fetal mortality rates, and child poverty. It is crucial for governments to support individuals in their family planning choices and implement policies that prioritize the liberty and freedom of their citizens, rather than enforcing bans and coercive measures.
