Tennessee state lawmaker Justin Pearson, D-Memphis, recently visited Virginia to support Democratic candidates and engage young voters ahead of the upcoming presidential and congressional elections. Pearson joined U.S. Rep. Jennifer McClellan in Ettrick for a meet and greet event near Virginia State University. The visit aimed to boost support for Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democratic candidates, as former President Donald Trump’s campaign scales back in Virginia. Recent polling shows Harris with a slight lead over Trump.
During the event, McClellan highlighted key issues and discussed her upcoming election against Republican challenger Bill Moher for Virginia’s 4th Congressional District. McClellan, the state’s first Black congresswoman, hopes to secure re-election with increased margins. Pearson, described as a rising star in the Democratic party, emphasized the importance of driving up interest in Harris’ campaign to benefit Democrats at all levels of government.
Pearson, who made headlines for his involvement in a protest against gun violence on the state legislature floor, remains committed to gun violence prevention policies. He also highlighted the importance of economic issues and affordable housing concerns for young voters. Pearson urged young Democrats to become more involved in shaping their future by participating in the upcoming elections.
With Virginia seeing a significant increase in voter registrations among young people, Pearson emphasized the power of the youth vote in deciding the outcome of the elections. He encouraged young voters to prioritize issues such as climate change, economic stability, and affordable housing while urging them to be active participants in the democratic process.
