Federal prosecutors revealed that Ryan Routh had stalked former President Donald Trump for a month before attempting to assassinate him at his Florida golf club. In a handwritten note, Routh offered $150,000 to anyone who could “finish the job.” The note criticized Trump’s policy in the Middle East, specifically regarding the Iran nuclear deal. Cell phone records showed Routh’s presence near Trump’s properties in the weeks leading up to the attempted assassination.
The FBI is investigating the incident as an apparent assassination attempt, following a previous incident in Pennsylvania where Trump was injured. Fortunately, at the Florida golf club, Trump was unharmed as Routh did not fire his weapon. Searching Routh’s car, law enforcement found a handwritten list of dates and venues where Trump was expected to appear in the coming months.
Routh appeared in court on Monday, facing charges of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and obliterating a firearm’s serial number. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. The new court filing sheds light on the premeditated nature of the attempted assassination and the lengths Routh went to in his attempt to harm Trump. The Secret Service confirmed that Trump was not injured and is safe from further harm.
