Michigan Democratic senator criticizes DHS and FBI leaders for declining to testify in front of Congress • Tennessee Lookout

The leaders of the FBI and Department of Homeland Security came under criticism for refusing to publicly testify in a scheduled hearing about worldwide threats to the nation. FBI Director Christopher Wray, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Acting Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Brett Holmgren were scheduled to appear before the Senate Homeland Security Committee to discuss various threats ranging from cybersecurity to terrorism. Senator Gary Peters and Senator Rand Paul both expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of Wray and Mayorkas to opt for a classified briefing instead of a public testimony. The FBI argued that they have been transparent and committed to sharing information about national security threats, while DHS stated that they have offered a classified briefing to discuss threats in detail. Peters voiced concerns that this refusal to testify publicly could set a precedent for undermining Congress’ oversight authority. President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intent to nominate South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem to lead DHS. The FBI director is appointed for a 10-year-term, and Wray, who was confirmed in 2017, took over after the firing of James Comey. This development marks a departure from long-standing norms and raises questions about the transparency of the incoming Trump administration.
