Democratic lawmakers in Tennessee are pushing for a state law to ensure reproductive rights, particularly in regards to contraception and in-vitro fertilization, after Republicans banned abortions in almost all cases. The proposed measure, sponsored by state Sen. Raumesh Akbari and state Rep. Harold Love, aims to clarify that the use of contraceptive devices or medication and disposal of embryos from fertility treatments are not considered abortion under the state’s criminal offense definition. This comes in response to concerns raised by the 2022 abortion ban, which only allows abortions when a woman’s life is at risk.
Following the ban, there were worries that access to birth control and fertility treatments might also be restricted. The bill seeks to provide clarity and reassurance that these reproductive health services are protected. The recent U.S. Senate failure to pass legislation granting a right to in-vitro fertilization has added to the complexity of the issue, with opposition from groups like the Southern Baptist Convention and the Catholic Church.
Although it remains unclear if Tennessee Republicans will support the proposed measure, statements from Lt. Gov. Randy McNally and Gov. Bill Lee suggest a stance in favor of maintaining access to contraception and IVF treatments. Lee emphasized the importance of protecting IVF for families and expressed his belief in being pro-life. Ultimately, the protection of reproductive rights, including access to contraception and fertility treatments, remains a critical issue for the well-being of women and families in Tennessee.
