NY Archdiocese claims that insurer Chubb is denying compensation to sex abuse victims -NBC New York

The Archdiocese of New York has filed a lawsuit against its insurance provider, Chubb, for allegedly refusing to pay out victims of sexual abuse cases. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, accused Chubb of attempting to evade their obligations to settle claims related to decades of abuse. Despite settling over 400 cases not covered by insurance, there are still approximately 1,400 cases pending, some dating back to World War II. Dolan criticized Chubb for trying to protect their bottom line and delay paying claims that they are legally responsible for. Chubb, in response, claimed that the Archdiocese had concealed information about the abuse and hidden vast wealth to avoid responsibility.

In an effort to compensate victims, the Archdiocese announced plans to sell its headquarters in Manhattan and use the funds for settlements related to the Child Victims Act. This move is part of a larger financial strategy to address the ongoing legal challenges stemming from years of widespread abuse. The lawsuit against Chubb highlights the continued fallout from the Church’s history of abuse scandals and the complex legal battles that have ensued. It remains to be seen how this lawsuit will impact the resolution of remaining cases and bring justice and closure to victims of abuse within the Archdiocese of New York.
