Tennessee Takes Top Spot in First NCAA College Basketball NET Rankings, Ahead of Auburn, Gonzaga, and Duke

The NCAA released its 2024-25 college basketball NET rankings, with Tennessee at No. 1 and AP-ranked No. 1 Kansas at No. 9. Despite being ranked lower in the AP Top 25, Tennessee’s perfect record and impressive scoring margin contributed to its high NET ranking. Other top teams in the NET rankings include Auburn, Gonzaga, Duke, and Pitt. The NET rankings consider various factors such as strength of schedule, scoring margin, and quality of wins and losses. Additionally, a new metric called “WAB” was introduced to provide further insight into team performance.

Though the NET rankings are important for the NCAA Tournament selection committee, they are not the only tools used for evaluation. Other predictive and results-based metrics like BartTorvik.com, KenPom.com, BPI, WAB, Strength of Record, and KPI are also considered. Some surprises in the initial NET rankings include two-loss Duke ranking ahead of undefeated Kansas. Several teams were ranked higher or lower than expected based on their performance.

Overall, the NET rankings provide an early look at the top teams in college basketball and help set the stage for the upcoming season. Fans and analysts will continue to monitor the rankings as teams compete and showcase their skills on the court. Winners and losers in the rankings reflect the competitive nature of college basketball and the unpredictability of the sport.
