Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has unveiled a new school choice proposal, expressing support for President-elect Donald Trump’s potential dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education. Lee believes that states, not the federal government, should determine education policy. He introduced the Education Freedom Act of 2025, which aims to provide scholarships for up to 20,000 students. The scholarships can be used for tuition, tutoring, technology, and examination expenses. The legislation also includes funding for public schools and teacher pay raises.
Lee stated that school choice gives parents the opportunity to choose the best education path for their children, regardless of income. He emphasized that supporting school choice initiatives does not harm public schools, but rather enhances educational options for all students. Lee hopes that Trump’s education secretary nominee will understand the importance of giving states control over education funding.
The governor’s proposal also allocates state funds from sports gambling revenue to improve public school facilities and offers bonuses to teachers. Lee believes that Tennessee can have the best public schools in America by strengthening public education and providing freedom and choice to parents. This legislation aims to improve educational opportunities for all students in the state. Lee expressed confidence in Tennessee’s ability to fund education effectively without federal interference, echoing Trump’s views on dismantling the Department of Education.
