Tennessee Governor Bill Lee was found to have violated state ethics laws by accepting a gift from a nonprofit organization with close ties to its lobbying arm. The Tennessee Ethics Commission ruled that Lee benefited from an indirect gift provided by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which paid for him to attend a conference in July. Despite initially refusing to reimburse the organization for his travel expenses, Lee later asked the ethics commission to review the matter.
The commission’s opinion highlighted the close relationship between ADF and ADF Action, noting shared resources and similar goals between the two organizations. Governor Lee has been instructed to repay ADF for the cost of the trip, and the incident has sparked calls for stronger ethics laws in Tennessee. Representative Caleb Hemmer, a Democrat from Nashville, expressed disappointment at the situation and vowed to take action in the upcoming legislative session. He hopes that the commission’s opinion will deter lobbyist groups from offering similar trips to influence the Lee Administration.
