IG Report: Air Force General Christopher Finerty Engaged in Inappropriate Relationships with Capitol Hill Staffers, Enlisted Troops, and a Married DoD Employee

Air Force Major General Christopher Finerty was found guilty of engaging in “unprofessional and inappropriate relationships” with multiple women, including enlisted service members, a married Defense Department civilian employee, and three Capitol Hill staffers. The Air Force Inspector General report revealed that Finerty violated military laws by having improper sexual relationships with five women between 2020 and 2023.

The report detailed instances of sexting and explicit conversations that Finerty had with the women, including exchanging pornographic images and discussing sexual acts. Despite his claims that personal relationships with civilian government employees were not prohibited, Finerty was found to have compromised his position as an Air Force General Officer and displayed behavior that was deemed “highly inappropriate” and “unprofessional” by witnesses.

One particularly egregious incident involved a sexual affair with a married civilian DoD employee, where Finerty was aware of her marital status. This led to his demotion to brigadier general and subsequent retirement from the Air Force in November.

The report concluded that Finerty’s conduct was below the standards expected of an Air Force General Officer and that it had tarnished his reputation and standing within the military. The investigation provided a detailed timeline of Finerty’s affairs, emphasizing the violations of the Military Code of Justice that led to his downfall.
