Justin Hopkins chooses Minnesota over Tennessee and USC for football commitment

Ensworth junior cornerback Justin Hopkins has committed to play football at the University of Minnesota, choosing the Golden Gophers over Tennessee, USC, and Georgia Tech. The 6-foot, 160-pound four-star prospect was impressed by the energy and atmosphere surrounding the Minnesota football program during his visit to campus for a game last season.

Hopkins is considered the No. 9 player from the 2026 class in Tennessee and the No. 21 cornerback nationally. He had an impressive season at Ensworth, recording two interceptions, seven pass breakups, 16 tackles, and a defensive touchdown. He also excelled as a receiver and kick returner, with 42 receptions for 705 yards and seven touchdowns, along with a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown.

While Minnesota coaches have told Hopkins he will primarily play cornerback, there will also be opportunities for him to contribute on offense and special teams in a return role. Despite receiving strong interest from Tennessee and USC, Hopkins ultimately chose Minnesota because something about the program stood out differently to him.

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel made it clear to Hopkins that UT’s offer was committable, but ultimately, Hopkins followed his gut feeling and made the decision to join the Golden Gophers. He expressed appreciation for the recruiting efforts of Tennessee but felt compelled to take a chance and go with a different opportunity.
